APTHOUS ULCERS

These are very painful small ulcers that can enlarge to form large ulcers inside the mouth.  It starts as a red spot that rapidly forms a ulcer.  It can cause havoc while eating especially spicy foods.

While most people have a few ulcers and are not concerned a few have misery with it.  The major type is called Suttons disease or as dermatologists tend to complicate skin diseases – periadenitis mucosa necrotica recurrens!

Treatment

1. Your doctor may prescribe

Tetracycline usually best taken as a syrup 250mg 4 times daily (not in children under 12 as it can discolor their teeth in a permanent way)

2. Topical pain relief may be achieved by benzdyamine hydrochloride, choline salicyclate dental gel.

Other measures like deworming, elimination of citrus fruits, eggs, shell fish, food additives have their advocates.
