DANDRUFF (Seborrhoeic dermatitis) Scaling of scalp is a common finding in many people, but can cause
intense discomfort to some patients. Seen
as flakes of skin on hair which may settle on upper clothes to cause social
embarrassment, this condition can be kept under control and treated effectively.
Most patients complain of
flaking and itchy skin on scalp.
Scratching the scalp with finger nails yields clumps of greasy scales. A yeast called pityrosporum
ovale has been linked to dandruff. So
the keyword is to control the problem rather than cure the dandruff.
It is not contagious, but as a yeast has been linked to it separate combs
and towels make sensible advise. Treatment Washing hair more often than usual will help most patients.
As the disease has been linked to an yeast, an antiyeast preparation
called ketoconazole shampoo is helpful. Nizral
Tm is available commercially. It
can be used twice weekly indefinitely. Sometimes in the initial
stages the scalp is too sore hence may need topical steroid lotion to control
the soreness. While it is safe to
use these for a short period do not use these daily indefinitely. Coal tar containing
shampoos can also be used. Some
examples are Polytar Tm Capasal. Tm.
