Folliculitis decalvans

The above term refers to a  type of inflammation affecting the hair over scalp and rarely beard area.  It is seen as yellowish pustules over the scalp that crust leaving behind scars on the scalp.  These scars are rather irregular typically smooth and hairless.  Men have more scars than women.

Why do I have this

 No aetiology is known even though some times germs can be grown from skin swabs done in the area.

 Treatment

1. Cleansing agents like Burrow’s solution, Betadine ^Tm skin cleansers, potassium permanganate solution may be used to clean the area to help keep away germs.
2. Antibiotics may help and may need to be given on a low dose – long term basis.
3. Intralesional steroids may help in certain cases.
4. Hair transplant surgical operations may be useful in early stages.
