HAIRY TONGUE

This is a discolored area in the back of the tongue.  It does not indicate hair growth! Rather it just indicates over growth of normal papillae (finger like projections on the tongue)

It can be seen after oral antibiotics particularly tetracycline.

Treatment

Good use of a tooth brush to brush the affected area of tongue twice daily will help to clear it in a few weeks.  Sometimes tretinoin 0.025% (only if advised by your doctor) may be applied and removed a few minutes later.  This may be used for 3 – 4 weeks.
