GLOSSARY

 

 Learn the language and speak it

 Some of the skin diseases are easily unraveled by its name !!!!!

 PAPULE – a small  superficial elevation or depression in the skin under 1cm

 PLAQUE – a superficial  elevation or depression in the skin more than  1cm.

 Nodule – a 3 dimensional growth of a plaque results in a nodule.

 Macule superficial elevation or depression in the skin under 1cm

 Patch – superficial elevation or depression in the skin above 1cm

 VESICLE- small elevation of skin containing clear fluid less than 1 cm

 BULLA -  small elevation of skin containing clear fluid more than 1cm

 WHEAL – elevated transient swelling of the skin usually lasts for 6 to 8 hours

 ANGIOEDEMA – diffuse deep  swelling of skin lasts for 6 to 8 hours or more– seen in limbs,    around eyes, lips

PUSTULE – obvious small collections of pus in the skin

 HAEMATOMA – gross collection of blood under the skin

 TELANGIECTASIA – visible irreversible dilation of small blood vessels

 ERYTHEMA – visible reversible dilation of small blood vessels

 SCALE – visible shedding of skin

CRUST – dried up secretions resulting in a hard wound cover

KERATOSIS – thickening of the skin which is hard in consistency

ULCER – defect in skin exposing the underlying tissue

EROSION – partial defect in skin usually seen in scratch marks

SCAR – healed contracted wound

 ATROPHY – flattened or depressed or wrinkled skin

 LICHENIFICATION – thickened visible accentuated skin markings – it takes at least 1,00000 rubbing to produce lichenification.

 NUMMULAR – looks like a coin

ARCUATE – curved

 ANNULAR – circle shape

 CIRCINATE– same as circle

 PIGMENTATION – alteration in skin color –usually brownish or black

 HYPOPIGMENTATION- Decreased skin color

 HYPERPIGMENTATION-Increased skin color

 DEPIGMENTATION-absent skin color
