MILIARIA  (prickly heat)

It is a common problem caused by blockage of sweat gland openings in the skin.  This occurs due to increased heat and humidity.

There are 5 types depending upon the level of obstruction.

If the obstruction is deep in the skin then it is called miliaria profunda.

If it is at a middle level it is called miliaria rubra.  If it is at a very superficial level it is called miliaria crystallina.  If pustules are seen then it is known as miliaria pustulosa.

Cause:-  Increased sweating due to increased heat and humidity is the cause.  As a response to heat & humidity sweating increases until the openings are blocked which results in decreased sweating causing prickly heat.

Itchy dull red papules develop at the affected areas.  The soreness can be quite distressing.

Treatment

  1. Cooling of the body by air conditioning helps.
  2. Topical steroids help to reduce itching.
  3. Increased fluid intake helps to maintain the homeostasis in the body.
  4. Anhydrous lanolin can help in some patients.
  5. Vitamin C 500mg per day can help to prevent if taken sufficiently early.
  6. Some people suggest vitamin A, as well as oral antibiotics to prevent miliaria.
