MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM

This is a very distinct type of rash caused by a pox virus.  It looks like pearls cut by half with a central depression and placed on the skin.  Usually white or pink they can grow upto 1cm in size.

The main problem is cosmetic while occasionally they can get irritated or become infected.  It is commoner in children, people with eczema and people with immune defects.  Most of the lesion resolve in 9 months to 2 years.

Do I need to get this treated

It is probably best left alone as treatments tend to destroy the lesion and can result in a scar.  Natural resolution leaves no scar or marks so the choice is entirely yours.

 Methods of treatment

  1. Liquid nitrogen is sprayed on these by the doctor.  It then forms a blister and settles down hopefully without the molluscum.
  2. Wart paint applications – A salicylic acid paint used for treating warts may be applied once a week (not too close to eyes)
  3. Simple removal by needle – no anesthesia is required.  A needle is passed through and the central core lifted off.  The resulting wound is covered by antibiotic creams and allowed to heal.
