So you have been told you can have a peel  or you have read some where about peels then ,,,,,,

PEELING – THE WHOLE STORY

 

Peeling is a method of application of a chemical to the skin that results in removal of the outer layers of the skin and when healed results in better looking skin.

 

Peeling can also be used for removing superficial skin lesions as well as wrinkles treatment!

Some areas where skin peeling can be useful

  1. Solar keratosis
  2. Wrinkles
  3. Superficial scars
  4. Multiple scars of acne vulgaris
  5. Color changes like melasma

 

What are the substances used

 

Chemical peeling agents

 

  1. Trichloro acetic acid – (TCA) 10-35%
  2. Jessners Peel – (14% salicylic acid + lactic acid 14% + 14% ………. In alcohol)
  3. Salicylic acid 20 – 30%
  4. Carbon dioxide snow
  5. Alpha hydroxy acids – lactic acid, malic acid (50 – 70%)
  6. Baker Gordon solution – phenol 88%, 2ml distilled water, 8 drops septisol, 3 drops croton oil

Before you have a peel ……..,,,,,,,,

 

First the patient and doctor needs to have a long chat regarding the problem, treatments and its outcome.

While the doctor will ascertain the skin is suitable for peeling, the patient will need to have a realistic expectation of the end results.  Miracles are rarely achieved in cosmetic procedures however any minor change in facial features can be good or bad.

 

  1. Patients should not be on a drug called warfarin.
  2. Aspirin may be stopped a week before if your doctor feels it is appropriate.
  3. Smoking should be stopped – smoking causes wrinkles around mouth and eyes.
  4. Surgery on the face, prior intake of a drug called isotretinoin, extreme sun damaged skin all need careful consideration by the doctor before commencement of peels.
  5. History of Herpes (cold sores) on the lips may require prophylactic antiviral tablets before the procedure.

 

How is a peel done ………,,,,,,,,,,,,

 

After you have given consent you will be led to the operating room.

 

  1. The skin will be removed of grease by application of acetone.
  2. The skin that is surrounding the area will be protected by vaseline application.
  3. The peeling agent is then applied for the correct time by your doctor.
  4. Neutralizing agents – either special chemicals or water is applied.

 

What to expect after a peel

 

A peel is like a light burn to the skin so initially there could be redness of the skin.  The skin will form like a wound and slowly begin to heal.  An antibiotic cream may be advised by your doctor.  The skin will peel and look rather unattractive for some time.

 

Some complications that may occur.

 

  1. Color – change – darkened areas or whitish areas may appear.
  2. Infection – as the peeling results in a wound like surface infection can happen.
  3. Scars and keloids can result.
  4. Erythema – prolonged redness can happen.
  5. Viral infection – cold sores can develop if there is a history of cold sores.
