PERIORAL DERMATITIS

This is a condition related to ROSACEA

Women are more affected.  Most patients are between 20 – 50 years old.

Clinically papules and pustules appear on a red background around the mouth.  Burning sensation and soreness predominates while itching is less common.

Why does perioral dermatitis appear

Most patients will have been treated with topical steroids indicating a possible cause.  Some cosmetics like fluoridated toothpastes, creams with petrolatum or paraffin base have been suggested as causes.  Sunlight also is thought to worsen patients with perioral dermatitis.

Treatment

Alcohol, hot spicy foods, caffeine may be best avoided.
