PERIORAL DERMATITIS This is a condition related to ROSACEA Women are more affected. Most
patients are between 20 – 50 years old. Clinically papules and pustules appear on a red background around the
mouth. Burning sensation and
soreness predominates while itching is less common. Why does perioral dermatitis appear Most patients will have been treated with topical steroids indicating a
possible cause. Some cosmetics like
fluoridated toothpastes, creams with petrolatum or paraffin base have been
suggested as causes. Sunlight also
is thought to worsen patients with perioral dermatitis. Treatment Alcohol, hot spicy foods, caffeine may be best avoided. See also Rosacea Topical steroids needs to be avoided though in the initial stages mild
topical steroids may be required to wean off in the initial stages. Cosmetics are best avoided though it may be difficult as the condition
