Pitted
keratolysis This
is a bacterial infection affecting the soles.
It is usually noticed by the patient as small eroded areas. The typical patient usually notices increased sweating with
an increased odor. It is caused by
a bacteria called micrococcus sedantarius while some workers believe a bacteria
called Dermatophilus congolensis may be implicated.
Small circular erosions are seen on the heels, forefoot and web spaces
are seen. No
investigations are necessary as the clinical picture is typical.
Treatment:- Measures
should be made to counteract increase sweating see HYPERHIDROSIS Topical
antibiotics like Fucidin ointment, clindamycin, erythromycin, benzoyl peroxide
gel are effective. Other treatments
that also clear up the erosions are clotrimazole miconazole ( both are available
over the counter-please ask your pharmacist )
