This has 2 types - the long-term form, or the short lived rash.

Acute Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta

Chronic (long-term) Pityriasis lichenoides chronica

The acute form is more severe and also referred to as Mucha Haberman disease.  A sudden crop of reddish papules appear that become necrotic (blackish in the center) and resolve in a few weeks with not much scar formation.  Sometimes punched out scars appear.  After this episode settles another episode starts and the whole process may extend over years.

Topical steroids help but photo therapy may be required to control the disease.

Chronic Pityriasis lichenoides chronica

This is seen as small brown reddish papules on the trunk and extremities and resolve in 3-6 weeks with only discoloration remaining.

Treatment

Topical steroids help the eruption.
