PITYRIASIS
RUBRA PILARIS This
is a skin condition that looks very much like psoriasis to the untrained eye.
There are 5 types with a few being inherited. Clinically
it is seen as small reddish scaly papules that join together to form larger
plaques. The color is often
described as orange red, which however may not be seen in brown or black skin. These orange red plaques enlarge to form large areas on the
trunks with the hallmark being “islands of normal skin” being spared.
Thickening of palms and soles appears.
The patient has no or minimal discomfort on the skin on the body but if
the soles and palms are involved then they can crack up leading to discomfort. The
five types are
In types 1 & 3 the disease clears up within 2-3 years on average. Type 4 occurs in children and improves with age. Treatment It is very difficult to treat and it is better to wait for spontaneous
resolution. Other treatments tried
include – methotrexate, acitretin. Topical
steroids can help to reduce itching for the palms and soles 2% salicylic acid
may help.
