PITYRIASIS ROSEA

This is an acute rash, the cause of which is unknown.  It usually starts as a coin shaped scaly patch with central area showing  normal skin.

On the trunk a few days later a generalized eruption of small reddish oral scaly papules appear over the bathing suit distribution.  Itching is slight.

This usually settles in 4-6 weeks rarely 10 weeks.  Some drugs like Gold, captopril, barbiturates may cause a similar rash.

No investigation is usually necessary for typical cases but your doctor might do a blood test to exclude syphilis as it can mimic Pityriasis Rosea.

Treatment

Topical steroids usually help itching.  Sun exposure may reduce the itching and help to resolve the rash quicker.
