SYSTEMIC STEROIDS

These may be given as tablets, injections and have a limited role in treatment of many skin diseases.

Hydrocortisone

Triamcinolone

Prednisolone

Dexamethasone

Each have differing values hence must not be equated as tablets of equal efficacy.

These have various side effects in long-term use

1. mooning of face (fattened appearance)
2. thinning of bones
3. increased fat deposits in the body
4. pimples
5. excessive hair growth
6. increased blood pressure
7. diabetes
8. weakness in limbs
9. stomach ulcers
10. cataracts
11. growth retardation in children (usually when given for more than 6 months)
12. increased susceptibility for infections
