SUN AND YOUR SKIN

If you are fair skinned then you need to protect your skin.  Patients with vitiligo, lupus, herpes simplex and those receiving radiotherapy also need sun protection.  Sun burns occurring frequently can predispose to skin cancers.  A sun tan does not help to protect you from sun damage.  In fact frequent attempts at tanning your skin can damage it further.

Can I use a sun bed

It is not advisable to use sun beds as they damage skin.  The amount of light and rays emitted are uncontrolled and can damage your skin.  There is no such thing as a safe sun tan.

What sunscreens should I use

SPF or sun protection factor is the standard to go by.  The higher the SPF the greater protection particularly from UVB rays.  Check your product to see if it protects against UVA and UVB. UVA protection is graded 1-4 with 4 being the highest protection.  Sun screens with SPF 15 or more while SPF 25 are ideal.

Remember

Sunscreens absorb and protect while sunblocks reflect the rays away

Clouds do not protect against UV rays

If you swim you need a water proof product and after coming out of the water reapply sunscreens

 Apply sunscreens every 2-3 hours

Wear a hat and sunglasses
