Atopic Eczema

The bane of may parents, any help in treating this condition is welcomed by tired, frustrated weary parents.

At the same time being topical steroids used correctly offer an excellent way of treating and maintaing control in Atopic eczema.

Phototherapy

Treatment with ultraviolet light has been used for may years.  It is used as a steroid sparing treatment and can be used to control the disease.

Cyclosporine

Cyclosporine is a major drug with significant adverse effects and hence should be used with caution and in severe eczema.  Many investigations have shown short term treatment for adults is safe under strict medical supervision.

Tacrolimus

This is a drug that is used to suppress the body’s immune system particularly used in organ transplant patients.  While it is given orally to organ transplant patients, thankfully it has been developed in a cream form.  It has been used in 3 concentrations – 0.03,0.1% or 0.3%.  No internal side effects have been noted.

So this will be a good alternative to the topical steroids used today in the years to come.

SDZ ASM 981

What’s that?!! Another molecule similar to our friend tacrolimus is a promising new topical treatment.

1% SDZ ASM 981 cream has been found to be effective and safe.  It will need to have more studies to be available for general use.

Other treatment reserved for patients with severe eczema include

    1. cyclosporine
    2. methotrexate
    3. Azathioprine
    4. interferon gamma
    5. mycophenolic acid

An important point is here is that all these medications have major side effects.  It is the decision of your doctor/dermatologist to introduce these at an appropriate time.
