Whats new in hair loss The major cause of hair loss – androgenetic alopecia affects millions
all over the world. It causes loss
of self esteem and problems in a body image.
It is inherited. It affects
males in the front scalp while in women it causes overall thining.
It is this type that is the subject of intense activity. There are many other
causes for hair loss which is not discussed here.
Finasteride is a FDA approved drug.
It is given as 1mg /day. It
is approved for use in men only. 65%
of patients treated improve and about 20 – 30% do not respond.
It is not used in women due to effects on unborn children.
Previously introduced as 2% strength solution.
This has been relaunched with an extra strength preparation – 5% for
men. It can produce a moderate increase in hair with continued application
required. Minoxidil can increase
the hair to a moderate degree. However
sustained application is reassured to maintain the gains achieved.
