XANTHOGRANULOMA

 

These are small tumors that appear in infancy and childhood and resolve slowly.  No cause is known.  There is accumulation of a special type of cells in the area – called Histiocytes. 

 Serum lipid levels are within normal limits.  It is more common in white people more than blacks.  Usually single nodules or papules are seen while sometimes multiple lesions are seen.  

It is most commonly seen in face, neck, scalp, upper trunk.  The lesions are firm and rubbery to touch.  Ulceration and spread of lesions have been noted. 

 Internal involvement may be seen in lung, liver, spleen, testes, heart, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney.  Eye involvement is seen in upto 10% of cases and can lead to many complications like bleeding into the eye.  

The condition usually resolves in 1-5 years.

 Treatment

 No treatment is necessary for the lesions as they settle spontaneously.
